Andrea Klarin

This short series by Andrea Klarin has captured my attention. The lighting is beautiful and the scene is interesting but not distracting. Somehow the lighting reminds me a a film I watched recently, Sucker Punch. The effect is very 'dreamy' and almost surreal.

Sebastian Kim

I keep seeing the work of Sebastian Kim pop up and I must say his style appeals to me.

He started out by assisting Richard Avedon, a great portrait photographer, then assisted Steven Meisel, a great fashion photographer. He certainly struck gold with those two greats as teachers and you can certainly see a bit of each of them in his work.

Here's his latest shoot:

Smoking and Fashion

It still amazes me that smoking remains a feature of high profile editorials across the world. I know that as an Australian I am fortunate that smoking has been banned in advertisements, pubs, clubs, restaurants and some public areas.

I have noticed that Editorials shot by Australians rarely feature smoking. I presume that this is due to the laws in Australia and the message that the government are portraying about the health effects on smokers. Should the government ban images of smoking in magazines sold within Australia? Where does the control end?

In an interview Carine Roitfeld, an editor of French Vogue Magazine for 10 years talks about the regret she has for using cigarettes in so many of her fashion shoots.

Here's the shoot that got me thinking about this issue. The first shot is beautiful by the way.

Numero No.125

Another beautiful shot, this one by Amille Vivier for Numéro No. 125 August 2011. I'll try this style in the studio in a few days and see how I go. I'll use a long exposure and hot lights. 1 Second should give me the movement I need to soften the model up in camera.

One thing I try to do is shoot it right first time and do all effects in camera as I don't have time to play around in post.

Katie Holmes editorial

Love this shot of Katie Holmes in her latest editorial shoot although I can't help but see the Katie Holmes behind the mask and her association with Tom Cruise and Scientology.

Aircraft accident response in Papua New Guinea

The cold air rushed through me as I peered over the edge, the clouds that once dominated the landscape had been kind enough to tender their resignation and the sun now took post high overhead. The adrenalin I once felt no longer there. My mind races back to that garage roof. Such a simple act of jumping off holding a tattered bed sheet had sent my adrenalin into overdrive, now it seems, it takes more, lots more for that adrenalin to come out and play.

I lean out, a little further, a bit more. I was now standing horizontal over the edge, my size 9 boots and a strap the only contact I had with the ramp.

About me

I am 32 years old with a gorgeous wife and 15 month old  daughter. I am Australian and love this beautiful country although it could  do with a few more castles.

I have been in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for nearly 15 years with the last 7 of those as a professional photographer. I have deployed on both war and peace time operations across the globe and have loved every minute of it.

In an effort to increase my formal qualifications in photography I enrolled in a Bachelor of Photography course with the Canberra Institute of Technology. It was during this course that my interest in fashion photography blossomed. I have made the decision that this is the direction I want my professional photography career to head.

This blog will follow my progress as I attempt to gain a foothold into this challenging and competitive field of photography. It will also look at my current and past work as a photographer with the RAAF.

A note I will make is that all the imagery I will show from my career with the RAAF is copyright Department of Defence. I will talk about this further in another post.

'till next time...

Site Purpose

Hi all,

The purpose of this blog is to document my change from a war photographer to a fashion photographer.

I will talk about my current and past work as an Australian Defence Force photographer and also talk about my inroads into fashion photography.

Here is one of my war photographs;
